History

Prince Hill Wines Ltd has become the new name and identity for Mudgee’s Simon Gilbert Wines Ltd, the leading producer of distinctive wines showcasing the character of the Central Ranges wine region.

Prince Hill Wines is located in the surrounding vineyards of the small town of Mudgee in the Central Ranges of NSW. Mudgee is located on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range 220 kilometres west of Sydney. A modern winery and 25ha vineyard are located on the Estate. The red grape varieties of shiraz and sangiovese and the white grape chardonnay are best suited to the warm climate and deep alluvial soils of this long established wine region Prince Hill Wines was named after James Prince, an early pioneer who owned the land and lived in the homestead which is now the site of the vineyard and winery. A burial site next to the winery remains in testament to him.

Born in 1862, James Prince travelled to North America as a young man in search of gold. A few years later he returned to his home in Mudgee to work the land. The company has a number of brands, one of which is specifically devoted to a range of wines under its Prince Hill brand that pays homage to the hard years endured by the early Mudgee pioneers who reared sheep and cattle, fossicked for gold and established the first crops, including grapes, in the region. Their descendants mastered the craft of winemaking that created today’s world renowned Mudgee region for its fine wines.

Even today the Prince family still own some of the original land that was used as vineyards for the winery estate.  Anne Prince, a descendant of James, lives on the land adjoining the estate and keeps the legend of James alive by working with our chief winemaker on the selection of the best blends for the two flagship brands Five Shillings and Eighty Links.

Prince Hill Wines also offers the Acrobat and Card Collection ranges of wine, the wineries value for money wine range and premium commercial range respectively.

A popular cellar door outlet and function facility capable of seating 200 is also located at the winery.

The new name of Prince Hill Wines represents a celebration of heritage and a new strategic direction.

We are committed to continuing the pioneering spirit that has seen Mudgee emerge as one of Australia’s most innovative wine regions,” says Andrew Parkinson, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Prince Hill Wines.

“Our change of name pays homage to James Prince, the original owner of the wine estate and one of Mudgee’s early farming pioneers. The Prince families’ long and continued association with the estate made it the perfect choice for our new identity.

Prince Hill Wines continue to focus on wine quality and continues to explore grape varieties that are most suited to the Mudgee and the Central Ranges regions. These include the classic shiraz and chardonnay but also the emerging popular food and lifestyle wines with a distinct Mediterranean flavour such as sangioveseand barbera.

We are committed to providing consumers with premium wines in the $10.00 - $20.00 price range that offer affordable, new taste sensations to suit our modern Australian lifestyle. This is supported by a full range designed to suit both the discerning and casual wine drinker.
